Walker Federal Services successfully completed the design and corrective actions for
multiple Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) deficiencies at the Camp Nelson National
Cemetery in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The project encompassed a broad range of
improvements across historic and operational facilities, with careful attention to both
modernization and preservation of historically significant structures.
The scope included environmental testing and abatement planning for asbestos, lead
based paint, and mold, followed by extensive upgrades to the historic Maintenance
Building, Horse Stall, Public Restrooms/Breakroom/Wash Bay, and Storage Facilities. WFS
designed new ADA/ABA-compliant fixtures, HVAC systems, LED lighting, epoxy floor
finishes, and reconfigured locker rooms and restrooms. Historic rehabilitation included
restoring original wood windows, barn doors, masonry walls, and trim, ensuring
compliance with SHPO requirements and the National Historic Preservation Act.
Infrastructure upgrades added new fuel storage tanks, bollards, security systems,
IT/telecom rooms, fire alarm systems, and CCTV surveillance integrated with VA
standards.
Site-wide improvements addressed septic system repairs, new concrete pavements,
stormwater drainage, replacement of flower watering stations, and development of a
master plan to convert a dry retention pond into a wet pond with water features and
landscaping. The project also restored historic entry gates, perimeter stone walls,
ironwork, and monuments, ensuring long-term structural stability and aesthetic integrity.
By integrating modern infrastructure with sensitive historic preservation, WFS delivered a
project that both corrected operational deficiencies and honored the cemetery’s historic
and cultural significance.
