Walker Federal Services successfully completed a comprehensive Electrical Study and Arc
Flash Survey at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. The project required extensive field
data collection across the 900,000 square foot facility, including documentation of
electrical equipment, panel schedules, transformers, protective devices, and conduit
systems. WFS developed updated one-line diagrams, performed short circuit and
coordination analyses, and created accurate floor plans reflecting current electrical
conditions. Where panel schedules were missing, new ones were developed and affixed,
ensuring all equipment was clearly identified and documented for VA operations staff.
The engineering team applied NFPA 70E and IEEE 1584 methodologies to calculate
incident energy levels, determine protective device settings, and establish arc flash
protection boundaries. The study also included the preparation and installation of NFPA
compliant arc flash labels, providing clear hazard information and PPE requirements for
maintenance personnel. Identified deficiencies were documented with recommended
corrective actions and cost estimates to guide the VA in prioritizing future upgrades.
All work was performed during off-hours to minimize disruptions to hospital operations,
with close coordination maintained with VA electricians for any shutdowns or system
testing. The completed study provided the Kansas City VAMC with a reliable, code
operational readiness, and compliance with federal standards.
