Walker Federal Services successfully completed the Gravesite Expansion project at the
Houston National Cemetery in Houston, Texas, under VA National Cemetery
Administration (NCA) direction. The project expanded interment capacity by providing
2,400 new in-ground cremation sites in accordance with the cemetery’s 2019 Master Plan.
WFS prepared and delivered complete design and construction documents, ensuring
compliance with NCA design criteria, VA CFM Technical Information Library (TIL)
standards, and National CAD guidelines.
In addition to the expansion, the project addressed deficiencies in the cemetery’s existing
infrastructure. WFS investigated and repaired eleven (11) existing columbaria structures,
which also served as retaining walls, correcting stucco cracking, foundation settlement,
and drainage problems. The team also incorporated supporting infrastructure upgrades to
utilities, stormwater drainage, circulation roads, and landscape features, ensuring new
burial sections integrated seamlessly into the cemetery’s existing layout.
The work was performed with sensitivity to the cemetery’s ongoing mission and aesthetic
requirements, emphasizing dignified site development and historic preservation. WFS
coordinated with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), tribal organizations, and
other stakeholders, while also delivering design submissions in phased stages (schematic
design, design development, and final construction documents). The result was a fully
compliant, respectful, and functional expansion that preserved the solemn character of
the cemetery while ensuring capacity for future veteran interments.
